For Mac Users: Use Firefox for MyJob Java Applets
These instructions are for Mac users. Some MyJob responsibilities — such as MyJob Campus Directory — need special access. After you gain access, you reach Oracle forms with a Java applet.
To run Java applets from MyJob, Mac users must have Java installed and use the Firefox browser.
For Java, you need the free Java SE Runtime Environment 8 (JRE8) software for macOS. If your device has more recent versions of Java, JRE8 is still required for MyJob Oracle forms. Note that Oracle deprecated Java applets in JRE9 and eliminated them in JRE11.
Install Software
- Start by finding out which Java software your Mac needs. From the Finder, select Apple Menu > About This Mac.
- A prompt appears. Note what kind of chip your Mac has. It's either Intel or M series (e.g., M1, M2, or M3).
- Go to the Download Java for macOS website.
- If your Mac has an Intel chip, click the "Download Java for macOS Intel" button. Otherwise, for newer "M series" Macs, click the "ARM64 version of the JRE" link.
- The disk image (.dmg) file downloads. Double-click the disk image.
- The Java 8 installer icon appears in a new Finder window. Double-click the installer icon.
- Your Mac may prompt you to confirm you want to open the installer. Click Open.
- Follow the prompts to install Java 8.
- If you don't have Firefox installed on your Mac, download Firefox and install the browser.
- If you encounter installation trouble, report a Computer Support issue to the IT Services TechSquad.
Use Firefox to Log into MyJob
- Once you have Java 8 installed on your Mac, launch Firefox.
- Go to MyJob and log in with your Marquette username and password.
- The MyJob homepage loads. In the upper left, click the three-lines menu icon.
- An upper left menu appears. Select a responsibility. For example, for the Campus Directory responsibility, click "MU Campus Directory."
- A second menu appears. Click "Campus Directory Maintenance."
- A new tab opens in Firefox. You're prompted to "Allow this site to open the jnlps link with JavawsLauncher?" Select the checkbox to "Always allow mjprod.mu.edu to open jnlps links." Click the Open Link button.
Note: If you select the "Always allow..." checkbox, MyJob skips this prompt for future uses of the Oracle form.
- Java Web Start launches. The Oracle form appears for you to use.
- When you're done with the Oracle form, be sure to select "Exit Oracle Applications."
Troubleshooting Java Applets
If you can no longer reach the Oracle form from MyJob, make sure you are using Firefox. Next, check for a Java update on your Mac.
- From the Mac Finder, go to Apple Menu > System Settings (or System Preferences). The "System Settings" or "System Preferences" window appears.
- From the top the window, select the search box and enter Java.
- A Java option appears. Click Java. The window states "The Java Control Panel opens in a separate window."
- From the dock along the edge of your screen, select the "java" icon.
- The "Java Control Panel" window appears. Click the Update tab.
- If a Java update is available, click the Update Now button. Allow Java to update by following the prompts.
- Quit and relaunch Firefox. Then try MyJob again.
