Reporting Suspicious Emails
As cybersecurity threats like phishing and spam emails continue to rise, it is crucial to know how to report suspicious messages in your email inbox. Phishing emails are a common cyber threat that target individuals to steal sensitive information like passwords, credit card numbers, or personal data.
Reporting messages not only protects you but also helps the Marquette University Security team enhance the environment by identifying and mitigating security threats by:
- Preventing security breaches by flagging potential threats.
- Informs your ITS team about new phishing attempts.
- Protects others within the environment from falling victim to similar attacks.

Best Practices for Handling Suspicious Emails
- As a reminder, per our Mobile Device Management Policy, you should only be viewing email through the Outlook app.
-
Do not click links or open attachments: Malicious links or files can compromise your device or network.
-
Verify the Sender: Double check the sender’s email address for inconsistencies.
-
Forward the Email to IT: If unsure, manually forward the email to your ITS team for review.
-
Delete the email after reporting: Remove the email from your inbox to avoid accidental interaction.
-
Look for the caution banner: The caution banner gives the user a warning when emails are sent from outside the organization.
