FY26 - FY27 Computer Pricing and Availability
Across higher education and the technology industry, computer pricing and availability are changing. Over the next year, we expect devices from all major manufacturers to cost more and for fewer models to be available at any given time. These changes are driven by industry-side factors such as supply-chain constraints, component shortages, and manufacturers' model transitions and are not the result of local decisions. Our goal with this article is to explain what's happening, what it means for faculty and staff, and what is not changing.
What's Changing
-
Higher prices: Computer costs are increasing across all major manufacturers.
-
Fewer choices: Vendors are offering a smaller number of models at any given time.
-
Limited availability: Some models may be available only while supplies last
-
Less predictable delivery: Delivery timelines may vary more than in the past.
These constraints are expected to last longer than a single budget or refresh cycle.
What's Not Changing
- The Computer Replacement Program (CRP) will continue to provide reliable, supported computers.
- ITS will maintain clear standards focused on performance, accessibility, security, and longevity.
- Devices provided through CRP will continue to meet work and instructional needs, even if specific models change.
- Existing computers will continue to be supported for their normal lifecycle.
How ITS Is Responding
To minimize disruption, ITS is:
- Selecting systems that are readily available and supportable.
- Staying as close as possible to current specifications, even when exact models shift
- Monitoring vendor trends and adjusting standards as needed.
- Prioritizing reliability, consistency, and long-term support
Flexibility in model selection helps us continue to provide dependable systems amid ongoing supply constraints.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I wait to order a new computer to avoid higher prices?
Probably not. Prices are expected to remain higher for an extended period, and waiting may limit your options if certain models become unavailable. If you know you will need a replacement, ordering earlier is usually the better approach.
Will my current computer be supported?
Yes. Computers you already have will continue to be supported for their normal lifecycle, including security updates and repairs.
Will I still receive a good computer through the Computer Replacement Program?
Yes. While there may be fewer choices or different models than in the past, CRP devices will continue to be reliable, fully supported, and appropriate for your work.
Why are there fewer models available?
Manufacturers across the industry are dealing with supply and production challenges. As a result, they are limiting offerings to focus on models they can deliver consistently.
Does this affect Macs as well as Windows computers?
Yes. These pricing and availability challenges impact all major manufacturers, including Apple.
Will it take longer to receive my computer?
In some cases, yes. Delivery timelines may be less predictable, especially during busy ordering periods or when supplies are limited.
